Crystal Palace 1-0 Rayo Vallecano Highlights - Conference League Final

Crystal Palace completed a historic season by defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the UEFA Conference League final in Leipzig, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring the decisive goal to hand Oliver Glasner the perfect farewell.

The Eagles have enjoyed the most successful period in the club’s history under Glasner, who leaves South London after delivering three major achievements within 12 months. Following victories in the FA Cup and Community Shield earlier in the campaign, Palace have now added their first-ever European trophy to the cabinet.

The final itself was a tense and competitive encounter. Rayo Vallecano controlled possession for large periods and arrived in Germany full of confidence after a nine-match unbeaten run in LaLiga. However, despite enjoying more of the ball, the Spanish side struggled to create clear opportunities against a disciplined Palace defence.

Crystal Palace had the best opening of the first half when Tyrick Mitchell missed a golden chance just before the break. Adam Wharton delivered an inviting cross into the area, but the academy graduate headed wide from close range, leaving Palace fans frustrated.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the second half. Wharton once again played a key role, unleashing a powerful strike from distance that forced Augusto Batalla into a save. The rebound fell kindly for Jean-Philippe Mateta, who reacted instinctively to fire home from close range and send the Palace supporters into celebration.

The goal completed a remarkable turnaround for Mateta, who had reportedly considered leaving the club during the January transfer window before remaining at Selhurst Park after a move failed to materialise. His winner in Leipzig will now forever be remembered as one of the most important goals in Crystal Palace history.

Palace nearly doubled their lead moments later when Yeremy Pino struck a sensational free-kick that rattled both posts. Mateta also came close to adding a second goal, but Batalla produced an excellent save to keep Rayo Vallecano in the contest.

Despite late pressure from the Spanish side, Dean Henderson was rarely tested as Palace defended resolutely to secure a famous European triumph. The victory also guarantees Europa League football next season, completing an extraordinary campaign and setting a high standard for whoever succeeds Glasner at the club.
